{"id":16490,"date":"2023-08-23T18:51:23","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T16:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/?p=16490"},"modified":"2024-05-03T11:26:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T09:26:14","slug":"sarah-bernhardt-exhibition-the-divine-was-known-across-the-seas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/en\/sarah-bernhardt-exhibition-the-divine-was-known-across-the-seas\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Bernhardt exhibition: the divine was known across the seas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"initial-letter\"><h4>A veritable global muse of the Belle Epoque, everyone wanted to see, approach or even touch this &#8220;sacred monster&#8221;, against whom no stage &#8211; from classical theaters to 5,000-seat circus tents &#8211; could resist.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As talented as she was gifted with the fiery temperament of her &#8220;devil&#8217;s hair&#8221;, Sarah Bernhardt was as famous in France as she was on all five continents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This extraordinary fame prefigured that of the global superstars who would follow her, such as Jos\u00e9phine Baker and, closer to home, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Beyonc\u00e9 and Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition at the Petit Palais, in honor of the centenary of his death, closes this August 27. It&#8217;s an opportunity to get up close to 400 works and objects that belonged to this polymath artist, who was also an actress, painter, writer and sculptor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A play of fate<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Bernardt&#8217;s life is very much like Cinderella&#8217;s, or <strong><em>From Rags to Riches<\/em><\/strong> as the Americans call it: born into a miserable home, only to die in a blaze of glory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nothing predestined this <strong>courtesan&#8217;s daughter<\/strong> &#8211; who worked in a brothel &#8211; to take to the stage and become the &#8220;Divine&#8221; Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But fate had a hand in it, and her only experience of tragedy was on stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her audiences particularly appreciated her acting, excelling in classic plays (Shakespeare, Rostang, Dumas fils, Wilde&#8230;), and <strong>her ability to &#8220;give herself death like nobody else&#8221;<\/strong> in front of a crowd of stunned admirers, from Paris to New York, via Lima and Saint Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16494\" style=\"width: 838px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16494\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage.jpg 838w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-370x286.jpg 370w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-800x618.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-20x15.jpg 20w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-185x143.jpg 185w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-740x571.jpg 740w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-400x309.jpg 400w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-600x463.jpg 600w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sarah-bernhardt-stage-62x48.jpg 62w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Press<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The authoritative tragedienne used to say &#8220;if you don&#8217;t do what I want, I&#8217;ll stop dying&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The world owes her dramatic studies to an acquaintance of her mother&#8217;s, <strong>the Duc de Morny<\/strong> &#8211; half-brother of Napoleon III.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her studies at the Conservatoire, followed by her arrival at the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, soon revealed an innate talent that would later prompt Mark Twain to say: &#8220;There are five classes of actresses: the very bad, the bad, the good, the very good and Sarah Bernardt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a number of minor roles, she achieved <strong>success in 1872 with two plays: Les Passants, in which she cross-dressed, and Ruy Blas, in which she played the Queen of Spain.<\/strong> It was then that the author of the second play, a certain Victor Hugo, gave her the nickname of &#8220;voix d&#8217;or&#8221; (golden voice), the actress being, according to him, one of the few to make him cry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, she soon became dissatisfied with the roles she was given. She took things to a whole new level when<strong> she slapped a member of the company<\/strong> who had jostled her on stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the commercial failure of L&#8217;Aventuri\u00e8re in April 1880, <strong>she slammed the door on the institution<\/strong> with &#8220;verve et fracas&#8221;, publishing a letter of resignation in the press that bordered on insolence: &#8220;This is my first failure at the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, and it will be my last&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sued for wrongful breach of contract, she was <strong>ordered to pay Le Fran\u00e7ais one hundred thousand gold francs in damages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Returning to her mother&#8217;s home, she became a courtesan herself for a time to support herself, before returning to the stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freed from her obligations<\/strong> to the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, with the help of her impresario Edward Jarrett &#8211; whom she had met in London &#8211; she embarked on <strong>a pharaonic tour<\/strong> of the five continents, which the media were quick to cover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Such was her success that the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise called for her return.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tired of playing for others, she finally <strong>bought the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Renaissance in 1893<\/strong>, where she once again performed her greatest roles, before setting her sights on the <strong>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Nations<\/strong> in 1899, which she renamed Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Sarah Bernhardt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 1899 and 1914, she performed some forty roles<\/strong>, from Cleopatra to La Dame aux Cam\u00e9lias, Tosca and Th\u00e9odora.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Scandalously ahead of her time<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What first struck contemporaries of her time was <strong>her independence, which was out of the ordinary for her time<\/strong>, as she multiplied her famous lovers (Victor Hugo, Napoleon III, Georges Clairin&#8230;) and refused the dictates of society. This feminine Dom Juan was a feminist before her time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In love, as in her work, Sarah was <strong>guided first and foremost by passion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote: &#8220;I&#8217;m not made for happiness. Thus, when she welcomed her tubercular half-sister into her home, she left her bed to sleep at her feet in a coffin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16500\" <strong>a pygmalionne<\/strong>, helping to promote the talents of artists such as painter and sculptor Louise Abb\u00e9ma.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Triumphant world tour<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Bernhardt&#8217;s singular career was also due to her XXL tours of five continents: Europe, Africa (Egypt), the Americas and even Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To reach her venues in more or less ephemeral infrastructures, she swallows up the kilometers aboard <strong>her personal Pullman Palace train<\/strong>, taking personal assistant<\/strong>, Madame Gu\u00e9rard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere she went, she was greeted with the sound of the Marseillaise, particularly during her first American tour in 1880, becoming <strong>the personification of France<\/strong>. Thus, the tourist of the time, visiting Paris, only wanted to see &#8220;two things: the Eiffel Tower and&#8230; Sarah Bernhardt.&#8221; She thus came to embody <strong>the myth of the Parisian woman<\/strong> at the height of the Belle \u00c9poque.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Her first tour<\/strong> was a veritable marathon: <strong>157 performances in 51 cities<\/strong>. <strong>In New York<\/strong>, she played Scribe&#8217;s Adrienne Lecouvreur at the Booth Theatre to an audience that had paid <strong>a hefty $40 for a ticket<\/strong> &#8211; a considerable sum for the time, especially as most of them didn&#8217;t speak a word of French.
