The program for this Olympic year includes 54 films, 19 of which are in the running for the Palme d&#8217;Or.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention movie lovers, the <strong>77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival<\/strong> will take place from <strong>May 14th to 25th<\/strong> this year. This year, the Palme d&#8217;Or will be awarded on July 17th at the end of the awards ceremony by American director<strong> Greta Gerwig<\/strong>, who gave us one of the biggest hits of 2023, <em><strong>Barbie<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Festival&#8217;s selection was announced by its general delegate, <strong>Thierry Fr\u00e9maux, and Iris Knobloch<\/strong>, its president, on Thursday, April 11th, at a press conference held in one of the theaters of UGC Normandie in Paris, before being completed on Monday, April 22nd. This year, <strong>54 films will be presented at Cannes, including 19 competing for the Festival&#8217;s Palme d&#8217;Or<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c0FGPZDY5pk?si=Pc-A9GTkmi3_wjhV\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As usual, the selection of films is a meticulous process. This year, it is &#8220;<em>the result of the screening of a total of 2,000 films, all of which we have watched<\/em>,&#8221; Thierry Fr\u00e9maux wanted to specify. The 2024 vintage was eagerly awaited after the immense global success of <em>Anatomy of a Fall<\/em> by <strong>Justine Triet<\/strong> in 2023, winner of the Palme d&#8217;Or, then rewarded internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Akira Kurosawa in the spotlight<\/h2>\n<p>After Catherine Deneuve, immortalized on the set of Alain Cavalier&#8217;s La Chamade (1968), the 77th Cannes Film Festival has decided to honor <strong>Japanese director Akira Kurosawa<\/strong>, <strong>winner of the 1980 Palme d&#8217;Or for Kagemusha<\/strong>, which tied with Bob Fosse&#8217;s All That Jazz, on its official poster.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21070\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/affiche-\u00a9-Shochiku-Co.-Ltd.-Kurosawa-prod.-Creation-graphique-\u00a9-Hartland-Villa-_-Rhapsodie-en-aout-dAkira-Kurosawa-1991-_850x624.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1636\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instead of the samurai combat and Shakespearian drama that are inseparable from the director&#8217;s work (Rash\u014dmon, The Seven Samurai, Ran, Spider Castle&#8230;), the visuals reflect<strong> the trauma of the atomic bomb <\/strong>dropped by the Americans on the city of Nagasaki. The <strong>penultimate film<\/strong> in his prolific filmography, <strong>Rhapsody in August<\/strong>, <strong>released in 1991<\/strong>, tells the story of several generations with the bombings that shook the Japanese archipelago on August 6 and 9, 1945.<\/p>\n<h2>Star-Studded Cast<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actress <strong>Camille Cottin<\/strong> confirms her status as the new emblematic actress of French cinema by taking on the role of mistress of ceremonies for the opening and closing ceremonies. <strong>Xavier Dolan, the director of Mommy<\/strong>, will be the president of the Un Certain Regard jury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father of the <em>Star Wars<\/em> saga, director <strong>George Lucas<\/strong>, will be the special guest at the closing ceremony of the Festival and will receive a well-deserved honorary Palme d&#8217;Or for his legendary filmography. <strong>Studio Ghibli<\/strong>, known for animated films such as <em>Spirited Away<\/em> and more recently <em>The Boy and the Heron<\/em>, will also be honored with this distinction. Throughout the history of the Cannes Film Festival, many cinema legends have received this award, such as <strong>Jane Fonda, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Catherine Deneuve, or Michael Douglas at the 76th edition<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21066\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21066 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Cannes-festival-jury.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Cannes Film Festival<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But above all, while we&#8217;ve known the name of jury president Greta Gerwig since December, this weekend we learned the names of the <strong>eight jurors<\/strong> who will be accompanying her. Joining the American director behind the worldwide box office success Barbie will be Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, American actress <strong>Lily Gladstone<\/strong>, French actress<strong> Eva Green<\/strong>, Lebanese director and screenwriter <strong>Nadine Labaki<\/strong>, Spanish director, producer and screenwriter<strong> Juan Antonio Bayona<\/strong>, Italian actor <strong>Pierfrancesco Favino<\/strong>, Japanese director <strong>Hirokazu Kore-eda<\/strong> and French actor and producer <strong>Omar Sy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>A Sharp Selection<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, 19 films are competing for the Palme d&#8217;Or to succeed<em> Anatomy of a Fall<\/em>. Among the notable announcements is the return of <strong>Francis Ford Coppola<\/strong> in competition with <em>Megalopolis<\/em>, 45 years after his second Palme d&#8217;Or for <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em> (1979). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director <strong>Jacques Audiard<\/strong> will present <em>Emilia Perez<\/em>, a musical comedy bordering on the crime thriller genre, starring <strong>Zoe Salda\u00f1a <\/strong>and <strong>Selena Gomez<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20921\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20921\" style=\"width: 1170px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20920 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/EmiliaPerez.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"542\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zo\u00e9 Saldana in the upcoming film by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Perez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening film of the Festival will be the new feature film by the prolific <strong>Quentin Dupieux<\/strong>. Titled <em>The Second Act<\/em>, the director&#8217;s thirteenth film features a stellar cast. To embody the four main roles, Quentin Dupieux chose <strong>L\u00e9a Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and his favorite actor, Rapha\u00ebl Quenard<\/strong>, recently awarded the C\u00e9sar for Best Male Newcomer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20918\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/deuxiemeacte.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/> \u00a9 Quentin Dupieux &#8211; The Second Act<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shrouds<\/em> by <strong>David Cronenberg<\/strong> will also be part of the competition. With <strong>Vincent Cassel<\/strong> and <strong>Diane Kruger<\/strong> in the cast, this feature film co-produced by Maison<strong> Saint Laurent &#8211; <\/strong>like <em>Emilia Perez<\/em> and <em>Parthenope<\/em> by<strong> Paolo Sorrentino &#8211; <\/strong>tells the story of Karsh, a renowned businessman who, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">after the death of his wife, invents a revolutionary system to allow the living to connect with their dearly departed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another event of this official selection, <strong>Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos<\/strong> will present the film <em>Kinds of Kindness<\/em>. After the critical success of <em>The Lobster<\/em> (2015) and <em>Poor Things<\/em> (2023), there is no doubt that the new film by the Greek director will captivate both the audience and the jury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8fYtuE_ZJ4E?si=e9BSuWOTM5FWaWTz\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, it is worth noting the presence of the animated film <em>The Most Precious Merchandise by <\/em><strong>Michel Hazanavicius<\/strong> in this selection<em>. <\/em>The director of <em>The Artist, OSS 117 <\/em>and<em> Deerskin<\/em>! has been working for several years on the adaptation of this tale by <strong>Jean-Claude Grumberg<\/strong>. The story tells the fate of a child saved from the Nazi death camps in Poland by a couple of miserable woodcutters during World War II.
