Favorite of the C\u00e9sars,<i> Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/i> of French director Jacques Audiard suffers from the controversy surrounding her star actress.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, March 2, 2025, <b>Sean Baker made Oscar history<\/b>. His <b>independent film <i>Anora<\/i><\/b>, the story of a stripper saved from the underworld by the son of a Russian oligarch, won<b> five awards, including the top prize<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While <b>the sensation of the moment, <i>The Brutalist<\/i>, was the other big winner of the evening<\/b>, <b><i>Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/i> by Jacques Audiard was a disappointment<\/b>, confirming the curse that seems to dog French productions, the last time a French film won the best film award being in 1993 with <i>Indochine<\/i> by R\u00e9gis Wargnier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite a few allusions to the war in Ukraine &#8211; notably through the speech of Adrien Brody, crowned best actor &#8211; <b>this 97th Oscar ceremony also made an impression due to its low level of politicization<\/b>, a major first if we think back to previous editions. In addition to the holy grail of <b>Best Picture<\/b>, the feature film won trophies for <b>Best Actress, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The presenter, <b>Conan O&#8217;Brien<\/b>, also made one of the rare political comments of the evening:<i> \u201cIt&#8217;s a very good evening for Anora. This is great news! Two wins already. <\/i><b><i>I guess Americans are glad that someone is finally standing up to a very powerful Russian.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being at once<b> director, screenwriter and editor<\/b> of his own film, <b>Sean Baker becomes with four nominations<\/b>, the <b>first person to be awarded in four categories for the same film<\/b>, according to Variety <b>best actress<\/b>, paying tribute to sex workers in her speech.<\/p>\n<h2>Adrian Brody, imperial<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A film acclaimed by critics, <b><i>The Brutalist<\/i>, by Brady Corbet<\/b>, did not leave the ceremony empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Focusing on deconstructing the American dream, the film narrates the difficult journey of reconstruction and integration of a Hungarian architect, a survivor of the death<\/b> camps, who left to start a new life on the other side of the Atlantic in the aftermath of the Second World won by Adrian Brody, twenty-two years after his success in Roman Polanski&#8217;s The Pianist, another film with the Holocaust<\/b> as its backdrop, that will be remembered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The American actor appeared in a Giorgio Armani tailored suit with a midnight blue tuxedo with notched lapels, a single button, satin trim, a white shirt and a bow tie.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At 51 years of age and for his <b>second Oscar nomination<\/b>, Adrien Brody won the <b>statuette for Best Actor against Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/b> (<i>The Perfect Stranger<\/i>), <b>Ralph Fiennes<\/b> (<i>The Conjuring<\/i>), <b>Colman Domingo<\/b> (<i>Sing Sing<\/i>) and the larger-than-life Donald Trump played by <b>Sebastian Stan<\/b> (<i>The occasion, the actor did not fail to exceed the time allotted to the winners by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his speech and to engage in politics in his own way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am here <\/em><b><em>once again to represent the ongoing trauma, the repercussions of war, systematic oppression, anti-Semitism and racism.\u201d<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an allusion that echoes both Donald Trump&#8217;s policy &#8211; without quoting him &#8211; and the war in Ukraine, he said he was praying <i>\u201cfor a healthier, happier and more inclusive world\u201d. He added, \u201cAnd <\/i><b><i>if the past can teach us anything, it is to remember not to let hatred express itself unchecked.<\/i><\/b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A warning, which is reminiscent of Cillian Murphy&#8217;s speech at the previous Oscars ceremony for the film Oppenheimer<\/b>, a dark biopic about the designer of the atomic bomb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Irish actor, winner of the Best Actor award in 2024, concluded his speech with <i>\u201cWe made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we all live in Oppenheimer&#8217;s world. So I would like to dedicate this award to peacemakers all over the world\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>These words echo the release in theaters on February 19 of the film <i>La Fabrique du Mensonge<\/i> by Joachim Lang<\/b>. While this film about the gender transition of a Mexican drug lord managed to win <b>two awards (Best Original Song with El Mal and Best Supporting Actress for Zo\u00e9 Salda\u00f1a<\/b>), it was <b>above all<\/b> <b>ruined by the controversy in which it has been embroiled for the past few months.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Academy seems not to have forgotten <b>the <\/b><strong>racist and Islamophobic <\/strong><b>tweets of its leading actress, Karla Sofia Gascon<\/b>, to the point of missing the category that suited it like a glove, that of <b>Best International Film.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it was Walter Salles&#8217; <b>Brazilian film <i>I&#8217;m Still Here<\/i><\/b> that won the coveted award. The film focuses on the investigation by a mother and her five children to find out the truth about the arrest of the family&#8217;s father under the military dictatorship of 1971.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29286\" style=\"width: 1382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29286\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1382\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-scaled.jpg 1382w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-691x1024.jpg 691w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-768x1138.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-1037x1536.jpg 1037w, https:\/\/magazine.luxus-plus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Movie_im_Still_here-60x89.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1382px) 100vw, 1382px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poster for the movie I&#8217;m Still Here, Best International Feature Film Oscar \u00a9 Sony Pictures Classics\/Everett Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another bitter surprise, equally French, <b><i>The Substance<\/i><\/b>, the film, directed by Coralie Fargeat and starring Demi Moore in her vain quest for eternal youth, has to make do with the trophies for <b>best make-up and hairstyles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The actresses in the film, however, shone with their looks<\/b>, with <b>Demi Moore<\/b> in a silver sequined dress by Armani Priv\u00e9 and her younger self in the film, played by Britain&#8217;s<b> Margaret Qualley<\/b> &#8211; noticed for her very James Bond Girl entrance &#8211; dressed in a black Chanel dress, Karl Lagerfeld period, from 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Canadian <b>Denis Villeneuve<\/b> also walked away with the technical trophies (<b>best visual effects and best sound mixing<\/b>) for his science fiction saga <b><i>Dune: Part Two<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>David versus Goliath<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Oscars ceremony, which was not very politicized, nevertheless gave the \u201cindependent cinema\u201d a first.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the Academy chose to recognize <b>low-budget productions not produced by the major Hollywood studios or streaming platforms.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, director Sean Baker&#8217;s <b>Anora<\/b> was made on a <b>restricted budget of $6 million<\/b>, with the rest \u201c<i>made possible by the blood, sweat and tears of incredible independent artists<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another unusual feature of this year&#8217;s festival is that the Franco-Belgian-Latvian film<b><i> Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of water<\/i><\/b>, <b>by Gints Zilbalodis, won the prize for animated<\/b> film, <b>overcoming the competition, notably, from Disney&#8217;s<\/b> \u201cInside Out 2\u201d.
