The expansion continues with China, Brazil, Europe and Latin America<\/strong>. The largest retailer in the world integrates e-commerce in the 2000s<\/strong> and boosts their customer database. In 2005, more than 5,000 stores<\/strong> were opened in the United States<\/strong>. That year, John T.Walton, son of Sam, dies in a plane accident<\/strong>, he who had been an administrator since 1992 and a pilot. Jim Walton, his brother, then replaces him in this position – until 2016<\/strong>. Alice Walton, only daughter of Sam, is the only one who did not sit on the board of directors, preferring to focus on her philanthropic and artistic projects. Jim\u2019s son, Steuart Walton, has been on the board for almost 10 years.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Walmart surpassed 8,400 stores worldwide<\/strong>, with more than 2 million employees,<\/strong> becoming the largest private employer on the planet<\/strong>. The economic crisis is benefiting society, with customers seeking ever lower prices. Five years later, nearly 12,000 shops are open in 27 countries<\/strong>. Some markets work less well (Germany, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan…) but others are explored like South Africa<\/strong> and the firm focuses on its flagship territories, notably the United States.<\/p>\n

After Covid, Walmart is reducing the number of its stores – about 10,770 in 2025<\/strong> – to increase its digital presence.<\/strong> Walmart is increasingly investing in e-commerce to catch up with Amazon\u2019s hegemony, as with the acquisition of the Jet.com and Flipkart platforms in 2016 and 2018 and the launch of Walmart Pay. For a few years, it is on AI that the firm has set its sights, while automating its processes as much as possible.<\/p>\n
