On Monday, October 13th, amid tears and applause, Israel experienced a doubly symbolic day : the handover of a final convoy of hostages to the authorities and the US president’s solemn address to the Knesset. The event illustrated a political narrative that Washington promises to transform into a diplomatic program. But behind this triumph lie a number of instabilities that may define the peace to come.<\/p>\n

Images of families reuniting with loved ones, escorted by the Red Cross, were shown repeatedly on television screens : the first seven hostages were handed over, followed by other convoys, until the official announcement of the repatriation of the last survivors as part of a broader agreement. These releases are part of a ceasefire negotiated and supported by international mediation, with the United States claiming to have played a leading role. But what is the reality ?<\/p>\n

How much credibility does this new era have ?<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking before Israeli lawmakers, President Donald Trump<\/strong> outlined his vision of a historic turning point for the region : \u201cThis is the historic dawn of a new Middle East,\u201d<\/strong> he said, emphasizing that the release of the hostages would mark the tipping point between an \u201cera of terror\u201d and an era of \u201cfaith and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This presidential rhetoric serves a dual purpose. First, it aims to consolidate a symbolic victory after two years of destructive conflict<\/strong>\u00a0: the release of hostages provides a politically exploitable narrative.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Second, it serves as leverage to obtain international commitments<\/strong> (funding, stabilization troops, guarantees). But questions remain unanswered : Who will oversee disarmament ? Who will ensure temporary governance ? What status will Gaza and the West Bank have in this new arrangement ? These questions remain open.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trump is thus positioning himself as the architect of the ceasefire and the new peace plan. His speech to the Knesset was an act of cons\u00e9cration <\/strong>: by addressing the Israeli parliament directly, he claimed moral legitimacy in resolving the conflict.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Furthermore, while several regional players such as Egypt, Qatar<\/strong>, and Turkey<\/strong> were already involved as facilitators of the talks, the US administration nevertheless presented a multi-point plan aimed at stabilizing Gaza, disarming armed groups, and launching a massive reconstruction effort.<\/p>\n

According to diplomatic sources and reports from the field, this plan includes international guarantees, a transformation of governance on the ground, and the exchange of hundreds, if not thousands, of prisoners in return for the captives. Commentators note, however, the contrast between the humanitarian emergency and the slow, sometimes contradictory, pace of security and political implementation.<\/p>\n

Between promises and gray areas<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Provisional reports released by the authorities and relayed by the press mention the return of dozens of bodies and the release of several dozen survivors<\/strong>, while the agreement provides for the release of a substantial number of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the remaining captives.<\/p>\n

While these figures give the story a concrete dimension, they also raise a political question : how can we reintegrate, repair, and empower people after such deep wounds ? The technique of exchanging hostages for prisoners has always brought immediate relief, but rarely lasting solutions to the root causes of violence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In Washington and several allied capitals, the apparent success of the peace decree has sparked praise and calls for massive financial support for Gaza. But several European and local voices are calling for caution : rebuilding on both sides without solid political guarantees risks being an illusion<\/strong>. Behind the scenes, UN and humanitarian actors are reminding us that reconstruction will require a considerable budget and a security architecture if a return to conflict is to be avoided.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indeed, some economists are already talking about an unprecedented reconstruction plan, estimated at between $40 billion and $60 billion<\/strong>, to rebuild the civilian infrastructure, hospitals, and energy networks destroyed in Gaza. But international donors are making their aid conditional on the establishment of a transparent governance mechanism, supervised by a coalition of states and multilateral organizations. This requirement underscores the extent to which the \u201ceconomic peace\u201d touted by Washington will depend on the ability of local actors to establish real institutional stability, beyond the diplomatic euphoria of the moment.<\/p>\n
