With an estimated fortune of several tens of billions of dollars, the Al Thani dynasty is one of the most powerful ruling families in the world, combining investments in multinational corporations with strong cultural influence.<\/p>\n

Al Thani, a name that has been on display all year round since 2021 in Paris, at the H\u00f4tel de la Marine on Place de la Concorde. Number 2 on this famous square is home to the Al Thani Collection, an exceptional collection of more than 6,000 works of art covering a period from antiquity to the present day and owned by the Al Thani Collection Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting art and culture, founded by Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani, first cousin of the Emir of Qatar.<\/p>\n

This family, which has ruled Qatar since the 19th century, descends from Mohammed bin Thani, a notable figure from Doha and founder of the modern dynasty. Their rise is linked to British intervention in the Gulf to curb maritime piracy and secure trade routes. Qatar, once under the influence of Bahrain and the Ottoman Empire, gradually became autonomous and gained independence in 1971. The exploitation of oil and gas transformed this family into one of the richest in the world.<\/p>\n

The current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, born in 1980, is the second son of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who abdicated in 2013 in favor of his successor, marking the first recent succession without a coup. Tamim has three wives: Jawaher bint Hamad, Al-Anoud bint Mana, and Noora bint Hathal. From these unions, 13 children have been born. The monarchy remains authoritarian, concentrating both executive and legislative power in the hands of the Emir.<\/p>\n

The family also includes Moza bint Nasser, Tamim\u2019s mother and a central figure in education and social affairs. She oversees educational and social foundations in Qatar and abroad, with an annual budget of \u20ac11 billion. As a UNESCO Special Envoy, she promotes education, science, and community development, strengthening the country\u2019s modern and open image. Another prominent member is Al-Mayassa bint Hamad, Tamim\u2019s sister, who plays a key role in Qatar\u2019s artistic and cultural sector. She chairs Qatar Museums and invests around \u20ac1 billion per year in art, acquiring works by Gauguin, Koons, and Warhol. Her global influence, recognized by ArtReview, has turned Doha into an international cultural hub and enhanced the country\u2019s prestige.<\/p>\n

From the beginning of his reign, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani continued the reforms initiated by his father: streamlining bureaucracy, opening certain positions to \u201cnon-royals,\u201d experimenting with elections for the Shura Council, and providing limited protections for migrant workers through the introduction of a minimum wage. Enriched by oil revenues, the family channels its wealth into global investments through the Qatar Investment Authority.<\/p>\n

Barclays in banking, British Airways in aviation, Volkswagen in the automotive sector, Harrods, El Corte Ingl\u00e9s and Printemps in high-end retail\u2026 These investments allow the family to diversify its assets and expand Qatar\u2019s economic influence worldwide. The Al Thani family also owns numerous properties around the globe. In 2011, they made a major move by purchasing the Paris Saint-Germain football club, strengthening Qatar\u2019s soft power through sports.<\/p>\n

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani\u2019s personal fortune was estimated at around $2.5 billion in 2021 by Forbes. Divided between the sovereign wealth fund, international investments, and real estate holdings, the overall wealth of the extended family is estimated at $172 billion according to BBC News Africa. This economic and cultural influence allows the Al Thani dynasty to play a major role on the international stage – in finance, sports, art, and diplomacy.<\/p>\n
