The city of Romeo and Juliet thus became the city of love&#8230; and opera.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>From Milan to Verona<\/b>, it&#8217;s just a stone&#8217;s throw&#8230; or rather a region.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>the former<\/strong> is the <strong>capital of Lombardy<\/strong>, <strong>the latter<\/strong>, associated worldwide with <strong>Romeo and Juliet<\/strong>, is the <strong>capital of Veneto<\/strong>. It is also <strong>a magnet for fans of popular opera<\/strong>, with the<strong> Arena Di Verona festival<\/strong> held there every year since 1913,<strong> from mid-June to early September.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <b>distance (105 miles)<\/b> between them, the two cities saw their hearts beat as one on Sunday, February 22, 2026, that of opera lovers and Shakespeare&#8217;s star-crossed lovers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the closing ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, the love of both was combined with a spectacle worthy of La Scala, featuring its mythical characters, all introduced by Rigoletto, the tragic jester from Giuseppe Verdi&#8217;s eponymous opera.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>An ancient site dating back to the 1st century<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long before the tragic passion of its 16th-century lovers<\/strong>, <strong>Verona<\/strong> was a Roman province, renowned in particular for its ancient amphitheater. <strong>Built in 30 AD<\/strong>, it could accommodate nearly 30,000 spectators.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>Roman arena, one of the best preserved in Italy<\/strong>, welcomes up to 20,000 spectators on the evenings of the <strong>Arena Di Verona festival<\/strong>, a mecca for transalpine opera.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Verona Arena gained its <b>operatic reputation in 1822<\/b> with the performance of Rossini&#8217;s lyrical prelude before its first opera season in 1856. But it was not until <b>August 10, 1913,<\/b> on the occasion of the <b>centenary of Giuseppe Verdi&#8217;s birth<\/b>, that the festival really took off. Rigoletto&#8217;s outfit, for example, was an authentic contemporary reinterpretation featuring <b>upcycled denim pieces<\/b> from around 40 pairs of jeans and almost as many zippers to create the slits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Passion for Italo-pop<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opera was not the only musical genre honored that evening<\/strong>, far from it. After starting out in rap, this Verona native and regular at the San Remo festival enjoyed his first success in 2015 with Young Crazy EP and Dio before establishing himself as a glam pop icon, not to say punk rock. The 35-year-old artist performed<strong><em> \u201cIncoscienti Giovani\u201d<\/em><\/strong> from his latest and seventh album, Comuni Mortali, a song whose music video pays homage to <strong>Fellini&#8217;s La Dolce Vita<\/strong>, notably the famous scene of swimming in the Trevi Fountain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Italian<strong> DJ Gabry Ponte<\/strong>, who was behind the success of <strong>Eiffel 65&#8217;s \u201cBlue (Da Ba Dee)<\/strong>,\u201d was tasked with setting the mood in the ancient stadium.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up before the 2030 Alps<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like all <b>Olympic Games closing ceremonies<\/b>, the evening culminated in <b>the performance of the Olympic anthem<\/b> before giving way to the <b>handover between the current host country and the future<\/b> one, namely Italy and France. The mayors of Milan and Cortina d&#8217;Ampezzo handed over the flag with the rings designed by Pierre de Coubertin to <strong>Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur region, and Fabrice Pannekoucke, president of the Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion, the <strong>promotional film for the upcoming games<\/strong> was unveiled, highlighting <strong>Mont Blanc<\/strong> and its 4,806 meters, which served as the backdrop for the <strong>very first Winter Games in 1923<\/strong>, not far from there, in<strong> Chamonix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Six years after Paris 2024 and 38 years after the Winter Games in Albertville<\/b>, <b>France<\/b>, which can boast an <b>exceptional haul (23 medals, including eight gold)<\/b>, is preparing <b>once again <\/b>to host <b>the Olympic Games in 2030.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Four regions<\/b> (Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Brian\u00e7onnais, and Nice) have been selected to host the next Winter Olympics. As with Milano-Cortina 2026, the festivities will be shared between <b>several locations<\/b>, ranging from <b>Nice<\/b> (for the ice events) to <b>Courchevel<\/b>, via <b>Serre-Chevalier, M\u00e9ribel, La Clusaz, Val d&#8217;Is\u00e8re, Montgen\u00e8vre, and Le Grand Bornand.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <b>Marseillaise 2.0<\/b> combining opera and electro was also performed by <b>Marine Chagnon, mezzo-soprano at the Paris Opera<\/b>, as the French flag was raised.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The festive spirit continued with the <strong>Californian DJ collective Major Lazer<\/strong>, who invited guest stars such as Danish singer M\u00d8 and her hit Lean On, released in March 2015.
