Between popular destinations and fragile natural sites, the hexagon sees certain places saturated by tourist flows that are sometimes unmanageable.

There was a time when destinations sought to attract tourists to boost the local economy. Then another one where the cities began to get excited about the influenceur’s affluence after having seen the Instagram video of an influencer. And finally, the current one where sites are conversely trying to get rid of the mass of visitors hanging on their phones to go right to the place of content posted by a creator.

If positive aspects for the regions are undeniable, the impact of social networks on travel in France is not always happy. With 102 million foreign visitors, the country broke a new record, making it one of the most popular on media platforms.

33% of the French are influenced by social networks when it comes to choosing a destination for their travels

Every tourist season has its share of inconveniences. And rightly so. If some sites were already ultra popular during the holidays, others face an overtourism difficult to control, related to photos and videos posted on social networks.

With algorithms favoring the “viralization” of spectacular visual content, some French destinations are experiencing this massive influx of travelers, who came to immerse themselves in a popular address on platforms and then resubmit their experience on the internet.

© Unsplash

The shared content often serves as informal guides: itinerary ideas, “instagramable” spots, restaurant tips, must-see places… Social networks are no longer just used to share your own vacation photos, but have become a key medium for discovering and planning trips.

According to a report by Opodo, a digital travel agency, 33% of French people are influenced by social networks when it comes to choosing a destination for their trips. Highlighting even more this dynamic and the generational gap in the relationship to travel, 58% of 25-34 year olds book flights to destinations they have seen on social networks. Conversely, only 13% of 55-64 year olds report being influenced by social networks. The phenomenon affects more women who are, for 34% of them, more motivated to choose a travel destination from social networks than men (29%).

And the phenomenon is not limited to the Hexagon. 49% of Spaniards and Portuguese, as well as 47% of Italians, say they are influenced by platforms to choose a destination.

An unmanageable overtourism for municipalities and locals

The problem? A destination can explode in a few weeks, leaving no time for local entities to organize themselves, and tourist waves then make it difficult for locals, sometimes disrespectful holidaymakers and the fragile environment to coexist. The result is deteriorated protected sites, unpleasant queues in the streets to eat in THIS trendy restaurant, crowded parking lots and security issues related to an imbalance between capacity and number of visitors.

© Unsplash

Victims of their success, several destinations have decided to no longer endure this tourist cacophony. And this, for the good of all. Measures have been put in place to stop the unmanageable influx. At the Calanques National Park between Marseille, Cassis and La Ciotat, a site highly prized for its coves, turquoise waters and scrubland, the very high attendance in summer has caused soil erosion, the deterioration of local flora and the increase in fire risk and pollution. Today, it is mandatory to reserve one’s place for certain creeks during the high season, in order to limit the number of daily visitors. Patrols also circulate to monitor tourists and warn about risky behaviors, or even sanction them.

Same bell sound on the island of Porquerolles in the Var. Small corner of paradise typical of the south, this small rock nestled on the Mediterranean coast has limited its number of daily visitors to about 6,000 people during peak periods. Despite an orientation “sports tourism”, the situation is similar to Mont-Blanc which imposed a quota of 214 climbers per day allowed to climb the summit.

In cases where the town hall and the tourist office have not initiated restrictions, the debate rages between locals and decision-makers to impose rules. In Paris, the inhabitants of rue Crémieux in the 12th arrondissement, known for its colorful buildings that delighted instagrammers and TikTokers, are mobilizing to close or limit access to the neighborhood. The Island of Bréhat, in the Côtes-d’Armor, the Cliffs of Etretat, the Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, Cannes (flooded by cruise ships), the Chausey Islands or even the Lavezzi Islands in Corsica face the same problem.

© Unsplash

Mandatory reservation, paid ticket, quota, closure, awareness panel, fine, demarketing… If many restrictions and sanctions can be put in place, the influence of social networks should not stop any time soon.
