In August 1909, he attended the Champagne Aviation Week and fell head over heels in love with these incredible machines. From then on, he had only one thing on his mind: flying. Since Garros never did anything halfway, he immediately bought an aircraft, taught himself to fly it, and then went on to earn his pilot’s license right away.

He quickly made a name for himself in air competitions: he went from one air show to another, setting records—particularly for altitude. His name soon spread throughout Europe.

And it was September 23, 1913, that marked a decisive turning point in his new career. On that day, Garros set out to fly nonstop from the south of France to North Africa, crossing the Mediterranean Sea by plane for the first time. He took off from Saint-Raphaël at dawn with barely enough fuel to make the trip.

The flight lasted nearly seven hours and fifty-three minutes, with the engine threatening to fail. Yet he reached Bizerte in Tunisia with only a few liters of fuel remaining. The feat was immediately hailed as a historic achievement : the man who called himself the “cloud kisser” became an icon, celebrated by artistic and social circles, admired for his daring as much as for his style.

© Musée de l’air et de l’espace – Le Bourget

He also made a name for himself in South America, where, in Rio de Janeiro, following a remarkable aerial demonstration, Roland Garros caught the attention of Major Paiva Meira, head of the Brazilian military commission. This meeting led to the organization of a week entirely dedicated to military aviation. There, Garros introduced many young officers to their first flights, helping to foster a new generation destined to form the foundation of the country’s future military aviation.

Among these pioneers was Ricardo Kirk, now recognized in Brazil as the country’s first Army aviator. Through this decisive impetus, Roland Garros established himself as a founding figure in the emergence of Brazilian military aviation, leaving behind a name respected throughout the South American continent.

In the service of combat

When World War I broke out, Garros put his talent to work for his nation. Military aviation was still in its infancy, and aircraft were used primarily for observation. But Garros sensed their offensive potential.

Working with mechanic Raymond Saulnier, he developed a device that allowed a machine gun to fire through the propeller without destroying it, thanks to metal deflectors attached to the blades. This innovation transformed the aircraft into a true fighter.

He went to the front and scored several aerial victories, becoming one of the first fighter pilots in history. But in April 1915, his aircraft was hit : he was forced to land behind enemy lines and was captured by German forces.

For nearly three years, Roland Garros was held in captivity. He finally managed to escape in 1918 with a companion and decided almost immediately to return to combat, despite his health being severely compromised by his captivity.

On October 5, 1918, on the eve of his thirtieth birthday, Roland Garros was shot down during an aerial battle at Saint-Morel in the Ardennes, just one month before the end of the war.

A legacy rooted in the courts

In 1928, a Parisian stadium intended to host the French Open was named in his honor: Stade Roland-Garros. As a great sportsman, it was at the request of his friend and HEC classmate Emile Lesueur—then president of Stade Français—that the new stadium was named after him.

Gradually, the name Roland-Garros became detached from the man and attached to the venue, and then to the event itself. The French Open became one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, and Roland-Garros eventually came to refer to the competition rather than the aviator.

© Musée de l’air et de l’espace –
