With its 3 million works and 230,000 m2 of space, the museum was inaugurated in 1764 and is located on the banks of the Neva River. It includes a part of the <strong>Winter Palace<\/strong>, residence of the Russian monarchs until the <strong>Bolshevik revolution<\/strong> in October 1917. The <strong>Winter Palace<\/strong>, an imposing building in <strong>Elizabethan Baroque<\/strong> style, was designed by several <strong>architects<\/strong>, including <strong>Bartolomeo The selection of works on display covers 14 centuries of <strong>Islamic art history<\/strong>. The building was designed by <strong>architect IM Pei<\/strong>, the man behind the <strong>Louvre Pyramid<\/strong> and winner of the prestigious <strong>Pritzker Architecture Prize<\/strong> in 1983.
