On the occasion of Milan&#8217;s Spring\/Summer 2022 Fashion Week, which starts today, we look back at the history of the most atypical fashion week in the Big Four.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Milan Fashion Week<\/strong>, born in 1958, is the second <strong>Fashion Week<\/strong> in history, ahead of <strong>Paris Fashion Week<\/strong> in 1973 and<strong> London Fashion Week<\/strong> in 1984, and after<strong> New York Fashion Week<\/strong>, founded in 1943 under the name &#8220;<em>Press Week<\/em>&#8220;, which however only became officially <strong>New York Fashion Week<\/strong> in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Milan Fashion Week<\/strong> has a particularity, it presents mainly brands and designers from its country, while other cities frequently host foreign designers, such as the French brand <strong>Lacoste<\/strong> which shows in <strong>New York<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If today <strong>Milan<\/strong> is recognized worldwide as the<strong> Italian capital of fashion<\/strong>, this was not always the case. The favorite was the city of <strong>Florence<\/strong>, led by the Italian entrepreneur <strong>Giovanni Battista Giorgini<\/strong>, who organized <strong>fashion shows<\/strong> in his home that was very popular in the country, with the participation of great <strong>Italian<\/strong> <strong>designers<\/strong> such as the <strong>Fontana<\/strong> <strong>sisters<\/strong> or<strong> Emilio Pucci<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Due to the popularity of these <strong>shows<\/strong>,<strong> Giovanni Battista Giorgini<\/strong> decided to move them to the<strong> Sala Bianca in Palazzo Pitti<\/strong>, and these events began to attract not only international journalists but also buyers from major American retailers such as <strong>Saks Fifth Avenue<\/strong> and <strong>Bergdorf Goodman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soon, this enthusiasm for <strong>haute couture<\/strong>, reinforced by the place that <strong>Italian fashion<\/strong> was taking in the cinema, spread throughout Italy and similar events were organized in <strong>Venice<\/strong> and <strong>Rome<\/strong>. From their studio in <strong>Rome<\/strong>, the sisters made outfits for<strong> Elizabeth Taylor<\/strong> and <strong>Audrey Hepburn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 1958, an event swept away the other competing cities: the creation of the <strong>Camera Nazionale della Moda Italia<\/strong>. The<strong> Chamber of Italian Fashion<\/strong> aimed to showcase Italian designers and was soon joined by several <strong>Italian fashion houses<\/strong>, such as <strong>Etro<\/strong> and <strong>Missoni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The city of <strong>Milan<\/strong> was the ideal location for the <strong>Italian houses<\/strong>, because being an industrial city, <strong>Milan<\/strong> had many production facilities nearby. Later, other figures of <strong>Italian fashion<\/strong> joined them, including <strong>Miuccia Prada<\/strong>, <strong>Dolce &amp; Gabbana<\/strong>, and <strong>Moschino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Highlights of Milan Fashion Week<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, on the occasion of the <strong>Versace<\/strong> <strong>fashion show<\/strong>, <strong>Gianni Versace<\/strong> decided to have his supermodels walk side by side, holding each other and moving forward, confidently, to the notes of the music <em>Freedom !<\/em> by <strong>George Michael<\/strong>.
