This opening takes place in a tense political context with Beijing, which is increasingly imposing its national security law on the former British colony.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>M+<\/strong> is a multi-billion dollar project. It symbolises<strong> Hong Kong&#8217;s ambition<\/strong> in the field of <strong>contemporary art<\/strong>, as well as its <strong>desire<\/strong> to <strong>rival<\/strong> museums such as the <strong>Tate Modern in London<\/strong>, the <strong>MoMA in New York<\/strong> and the<strong> Centre Pompidou in Paris<\/strong>. <strong>Contemporary artworks<\/strong> by <strong>Chinese<\/strong>, <strong>Asian<\/strong> and even <strong>Western<\/strong> artists will be on display.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The wait is over. Since the 2019 protests, <strong>China<\/strong> has imposed its law on <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong>. The <strong>National Security Law<\/strong> has led to the arrest of many<strong> democratic activists<\/strong> and <strong>opponents<\/strong> of the <strong>Beijing regime<\/strong>. This law also casts its <strong>shadow<\/strong> over <strong>artistic expression<\/strong>, which is very political. <strong>Conservatives<\/strong> and <strong>artists<\/strong> are already fighting against what looks like <strong>political censorship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <strong>pro-Beijing politicians<\/strong> and <strong>media<\/strong> launched a <strong>campaign of denigration and criticism<\/strong> of certain works. Featured photo: Tyrone Shi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tang<\/strong> also stressed that all exhibitions must &#8220;<em><strong>comply<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; with the <strong>National Security Act<\/strong> and that some works would <strong>not be displayed<\/strong>. &#8220;<em>I have no doubt that <strong>MoMA in New York<\/strong> probably has artworks in its archives that would not be exhibited today because it would <strong>not be politically acceptable<\/strong> in today&#8217;s environment<\/em>,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This episode marks the <strong>decline<\/strong> of <strong>Hong Kong&#8217;s once vibrant art scene<\/strong>. <strong>Intense repression of democratic<\/strong> and <strong>civil society<\/strong> <strong>activists<\/strong> has <strong>forced<\/strong> many <strong>artists<\/strong> into <strong>exile<\/strong>. <strong>Kacey Wong<\/strong> is one of them, and now lives in <strong>Taiwan<\/strong> to <strong>practice<\/strong> his art, although two of his works will be shown at <strong>M+<\/strong>. According to him, there is a form of <strong>artistic self-censorship<\/strong> that has been <strong>increasing<\/strong> for several years. Featured photo : M+<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The <strong>museum<\/strong> is clearly under <strong>censorship<\/strong>,<\/em>&#8221; commented<strong> Ai Weiwei<\/strong> from Cambridge where he is now based. &#8220;<em>When you have a museum that cannot or is unable to defend its own integrity in terms of <strong>freedom of expression<\/strong>, it raises a question.
