Its strong point is not its grandeur or its luxury, but the fact that it houses the only known mural by the Italian Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the most<strong> beautiful residences on Via Veneto<\/strong>, one of the most <strong>admirable streets in Rome<\/strong>. Built at the end of the 16th century as a<strong> hunting lodge<\/strong> and sold to the city of Rome in the 19th century, <strong>Villa Aurora<\/strong> is all that remains of the imposing ancestral residence. It is a huge building of <strong>2800 square metres<\/strong>, with a garden, a roof terrace, paths, three garages and nine bathrooms. Its base selling price? <strong>471 million euros<\/strong>, or<strong> $545.8 million<\/strong>, making it <strong>one of the<\/strong> <strong>most expensive in the world<\/strong>. The <strong>auction<\/strong> is scheduled to take place on 18 January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Its immensity alone is not enough to explain this pharaonic price. <strong>Villa Aurora<\/strong> has many other, more <strong>artistic assets<\/strong>. It is full of <strong>sculptures<\/strong>, <strong>statues<\/strong>, <strong>columns<\/strong> and <strong>ornaments<\/strong>, according to the list held by the <strong>Italian government.<\/strong> But what makes it truly exceptional is the <strong>unique ceiling fresco<\/strong>. Painted in 1597, it is the work of the famous <strong>Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi<\/strong>, better known as <strong>Caravaggio<\/strong>. Credit : Turismo Roma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fresco<\/strong> depicts the <strong>Roman gods<\/strong> Jupiter, Pluto and Neptune surrounding a translucent <strong>celestial sphere<\/strong> embossed with the signs of the zodiac, with the Sun and Earth in the background, <strong>Architectural Digest<\/strong> details. Credit : Remo Cassili \/ Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Italian property<\/strong> is also home to other priceless works, including a <strong>masterpiece by Michelangelo&#8217;s contemporary, Guerchino<\/strong>, depicting <strong>Aurora<\/strong>, the goddess of the dawn, on her chariot. It is this work of art that gives the villa its name. Credit: TC Brennan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The reason this impressive villa is now being offered for auction is because of a <strong>long-running inheritance dispute<\/strong> between the heirs of the former owner, <strong>Prince Nicolo Boncompagni Ludovisi<\/strong>, and his third wife, the<strong> American actress Rita Jenrette<\/strong>. Although the couple had carried out numerous <strong>renovations<\/strong> to the villa, the <strong>prince<\/strong> intended to pass on <strong>his ancestral home<\/strong> to his children and grandchildren. Family quarrels decided otherwise. Although she was born and raised in <strong>Texas<\/strong>, she has<strong> spent the last 18 years in the villa<\/strong>.
