On your finger for life: choosing the right engagement ring

A symbol of commitment, a sparkling promise worn every day, an engagement ring crystallizes as many emotions as it does questions. Between tradition, style, and budget, how do you choose the one that will tell your story without getting lost in clichés?

A ring that tells your love story

Before choosing a brand and talking about carats and settings, it’s important to ask yourself what story the ring should tell. A symbol of intimacy, the piece should reflect your love and the person who will receive it.

Discreet, traditional, vintage, fashionable, bold (with a pearl, for example), colorful (sapphire, emerald, tourmaline, etc.)? There are as many rings as there are personalities. The advantage is therefore on the buyer’s side.

The ring can also reflect a moment in your life together, such as a previous trip, an anecdote, or a shared memory. A star shape in reference to a marriage proposal under a starry sky? A colored stone linked to your favorite color?

Two pavé diamonds surrounding the main stone to echo the number of your children? A solitaire ring like the one her mother and grandmother wore? The idea is not to follow a trend, but to choose a symbol that is consistent with your shared history. Racking your brains before going to the store can sometimes make the final choice easier and give you more confidence about the meaning of your purchase.

Another tip: an engagement ring is not just worn on the day of the proposal. It accompanies gestures, meetings, trips, and impromptu weekends away. Hence the importance of observing the style of the person who will wear it, so that they don’t tire of it.

Set a budget

The rule of spending “three months’ salary” on an engagement ring—commonly used in the United States—is more about marketing than reality. The right budget is one that doesn’t affect your plans or your peace of mind, while still matching the style and quality you want. As a guide, in France, one to two months’ salary can be a good starting point.

Fortunately, the market has diversified: synthetic diamonds, independent designers, vintage or custom-made pieces allow you to explore different price ranges. If you absolutely want a ring with a large stone and a multitude of diamonds on a small budget, it makes more sense to turn to affordable brands, even if it means compromising on the quality of the gems. If you prefer a ring that can be passed down from generation to generation and will stand the test of time, but without breaking the bank, it is better to choose a more discreet piece of impeccable quality, with good customer service.

Today, many brands offer fully customizable jewelry, allowing you to add or remove elements to stay within your budget. The purity of the diamond and its carat weight can also be adjusted to suit your budget. Above all, it’s important not to compare yourself to your loved ones: the goal is to make a meaningful purchase, not to boost your ego in front of others.

Understanding the 4Cs

Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity: the 4Cs of diamonds may seem technical, but the goal is not to aim for absolute perfection—rather, to find the right balance between sparkle, aesthetics, and budget. Carat measures weight, not visual size. The higher it is, the higher the price, especially around symbolic thresholds (0.50 ct, 1 ct).

Cut is the key criterion: it determines how light flows through the stone. A very well-cut diamond will sparkle more, even with a smaller carat weight. Color, graded from D (colorless) to Z, often has nuances that are imperceptible once the stone is set. Clarity assesses inclusions, which are generally invisible to the naked eye. In short, it is better to choose a bright and harmonious stone than a diamond that is simply larger.
