The official selection for the 2022 edition was recently unveiled. And as tradition dictates, the International Film Festival has added several feature films to its official selection, which will be presented between 17 and 28 May in Cannes.
Good news for fans of the big screen, the Cannes Film Festival is returning this year for its 75th anniversary. After a cancelled edition in 2020 and a festival that took place in the summer of 2021, the Cannes Film Festival and its famous red carpet are back in service in May.
Nevertheless, the festival’s general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, is keeping a low profile in view of events in Europe. Indeed, the context of war in Ukraine is for him above all “a time of sadness”.
The organisers have also shown their solidarity by presenting two Ukrainian films in the official selection : a documentary by Sergei Loznitsa, which will be screened in a special session, and a first film by a young filmmaker, Maksym Nakonechnyi, which will be selected in the “Un certain regard” section.

The opening film “Z (like Z)“, by French director Michel Hazanavicius will be presented out of competition. It is also changing its name to “Coupez!“, because of a risk of confusion with the letter “Z” on Russian tanks in Ukraine and became the main symbol of support for the invasion.
The official selection of the 2022 edition was unveiled last week by Thierry Frémaux, along with the event’s president, Pierre Lescure. Less than 50 films have been selected this year, compared to 80 last year. 155 different countries submitted films for this edition. “The selection was difficult to establish,” said Thierry Frémaux.
18 films were selected in competition. Among them, “Holy Spider“, the second film of Danish filmmaker of Iranian origin, Ali Abbasi. France will be represented by “Les Amandiers” by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. David Cronenberg returns with “Crimes of the Future“. Hirokazu Kore-eda will present the film “Broker“. The Dardenne brothers return with “Tori and Lokita“.

Among the other films out of competition will be “Top Gun, Maverick“, by Joseph Kosinski, whose screening will be attended by the star of the film: Tom Cruise. Guests will also find the film “Elvis“, about Elvis Presley, by Baz Luhrmann.
Four films have been selected for the “Cannes Première” selection. Thus, we will find Rachid Bouchareb with the film “Our brothers“, around the story of the death of Malik Oussekine, but also “Dodo” by Panos Koutras, or “Irma Vep” by Olivier Assayas. The selection “Un certain regard” will include 15 films presented.
Note that this will be the last festival of Pierre Lescure as president. As a matter of fact, Iris Knobloch will succeed him, and will be the first woman to preside over the event.
