On 15 September, the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony was held, honouring the best series and television shows in the United States. While Hacks was honoured with the award for Best Comedy Series, Shōgun was crowned Best Drama Series. Discover the big winners.
While the 2023 Emmy Awards were held earlier this year due to the Hollywood strike, the 76th ceremony took place on 15 September. The event rewarded the best American series broadcast between June 2023 and May 2024.
The best series at the 2024 Emmy Awards
A firm favourite at the ceremony, Shōgun received the award for Best Drama Series. Among the nominees were The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses and 3 Body Problem. Broadcast from last February, Shōgun follows the story of John Blackthorne, the English commander of an abandoned ship who knows certain secrets that could help Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who is engaged in a fight to the death against his enemies in the Council of Regents. The series is set in 1600 Japan, at the dawn of a civil war that would mark the century. It is adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 bestseller of the same name. A first adaptation was released in 1980, starring Richard Chamberlain, Toshirō Mifune and Yôko Shimada.
Hacks won Best Comedy Series against Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows. This TV series created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky tells the story of a dark alliance between a Las Vegas comedian whose fame is beginning to wane and a cocky young screenwriter from Los Angeles.
The award for Best Miniseries went to My Little Reindeer, which was a huge hit on Netflix. The series created by Richard Gadd, inspired by his own life, follows the fate of Donny, a bartender trying to become a comedian, beginning an unhealthy and twisted relationship with Martha. Harassed by the neurotic self-styled lawyer, Donny must deal with her obsessions, which will awaken a dark buried trauma in him. The other nominees in this category were Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley and True Detective: Night Country.
The best actors and actresses at the 2024 Emmy Awards
Full house for Shōgun. Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actress and Best Actor respectively for the drama series Shōgun. Frederick E.O. Toye also won Best Director for the series.

Elizabeth Debicki won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, for The Crown. Billy Crudup won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The Morning Show. Also in the drama category, the award for Best Screenplay went to Will Smith for Slow Horses.
In the comedy category, Jean Smart won Best Actress for Hacks, and Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor for The Bear. The Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards went to Liza Colon-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach for The Bear. Best Director went to Christopher Storer and Ramy Youssef for The Bear, and Best Screenplay to Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky for Hacks.

Finally, the award for Best Direction of a Miniseries, Anthology Series or TV Movie went to Steven Zaillian for Ripley. The best actresses in this genre were Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country and Richard Gadd for My Little Reindeer. The latter also won the Best Screenplay award. In the supporting roles, Jessica Gunning for My Little Reindeer and Lamorne Morris for Fargo also won awards.
