Oppenheimer scoops five awards at the Golden Globes

On 7 January in Beverly Hills, the 81st Golden Globes ceremony honoured the best films released in 2023 and the talent behind them. Here’s a look back at the evening’s winners and the looks of the celebrities in attendance.

Unsurprisingly, Oppenheimer scooped a number of awards at the 81st Golden Globes ceremony. The film, which traces the ultra-secret development of the atomic bomb during the Second World War, was crowned Best Drama. Christopher Nolan won Best Director, while the film’s lead actor, Cillian Murphy, was named Best Actor in a Dramatic Film. Robert Downey Jr was named Best Supporting Actor. The award for Best Film Score also went to Oppenheimer for the soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson.

Anatomy of a Fall also won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film. Directed by French filmmaker Justine Triet, the film tells the story of writer Sandra, her husband Samuel and their 11-year-old son Daniel. After Samuel’s death, Sandra becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

Best Musical/Comedy Film went to Poor Creatures. Emma Stone, who was part of the cast, won the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. The film tells the story of the adventure and discovery of Bella, a curious woman determined to advocate her values of equality and liberation.

While the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Paul Giamatti for Winter Break, Da’Vine’s Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for the same film. The film features a highly original trio in the winter of 1970: Mr Hunham, a professor of ancient history, the gifted and rebellious pupil Angus, and the bereaved cook Mary.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture and Best Box Office. The award for Best Drama Series went to Succession. Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama went to Lily Gladstone for her role in Killers of The Flower Moon. Best Animated Film went to The Boy and the Heron.

A host of celebrities

Margot Robbie, Barbie’s lead actress, was, as she has been for months now, dressed all in pink in a Giorgio Armani dress. Still in pink, but this time paler, Jennifer Lopez opted for a strapless dress with imposing floral sleeves designed by Nicole + Felicia Couture. And in terms of pastel shades, Brie Larson was the star of the show in an elegant parma dress by Prada.
