The 7 best back-to-school fashion campaigns

Throughout September, fashion houses unveiled their advertising campaigns for the winter and summer seasons. From Balmain to Balenciaga and Stone Island, we take a look back at seven striking advertising campaigns.

Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bündchen, Kendall Jenner, Isabelle Huppert, Liam Gallagher… It’s been an eventful autumn for the communications departments of fashion brands. Whether the set designs are ultra-worked or studio-based, these campaigns have put the spotlight on major celebrities to promote their forthcoming winter or summer collections.

For spring-summer 2025, Celine is unveiling a very British wardrobe. To showcase these clothes, the brand travelled to the English gardens of Holkham Hall, an 18th-century country house owned by the Earl of Leicester. Artistic director Hedi Slimane was in charge of both photography and styling for the shoot. He unveiled a very preppy wardrobe in an aristocratic atmosphere featuring statues, ponds for paddling and a piano in a princely setting. The perfect combo to represent a certain elitist youth attending the top universities. The same goes for the campaign dedicated to preppy, sophisticated women, photographed in Compiègne.

Balmain

Balmain’s 2024 winter campaign is a flight of elegance. Shot by Theo Liu, it invites us to a car park where a ballet of helicopters is being orchestrated. A recurring theme in Michael Kors campaigns. Model Caroline Trentini clings to it with refinement, wearing a red dress and the new Jolie Madame bag. And model Charlie Knepper, wearing a shirt with a big kiss on the chest and a face covered in red kisses. Balmain’s uninhibitedly sexy vibe.

After calling on Jeremy Allen White, star of the series The Bear, Calvin Klein has enlisted model Kendall Jenner and actor Alexander Skarsgård. Led by photographer Mert Alas, the autumn campaign plays on both desirability and spontaneity. Kendall Jenner poses on a beach in clothes from this season’s 2024-2025 collection, including strapless dresses, straight tailored trousers and timeless black coats. Alexander Skarsgård is as magnetic as ever, preparing to step out of his magnificent villa, bathed in golden hour sunshine.

Stone Island

While the reformation of the iconic band Oasis galvanised the music world a few weeks ago, its legendary singer Liam Gallagher has become the face of Stone Island. It’s an unsurprising appointment, and one that was eagerly awaited, given that the artist is a great fan of the brand and has been adopting its iconic parkas for many years. Photographer David Sims shot a simple photo of Liam Gallagher against a white background, much appreciated by Stone Island’s artistic direction. Simple and spontaneous, these visuals are accompanied by a playful interview devised by art critic Hans Ulrich. Other celebrities were also featured, including actor Russell Tovey, DJ Peggy Gou and rapper, model and skateboarder Sage Elsesser.

Naomi x Boss

When it comes to a capsule collection co-created by model and businesswoman Naomi Campbell, the campaigns are sure to get people talking. While the fashion icon had a tumultuous September, to say the least, between her decoration in France as a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the scandal surrounding the abusive spending of her Fashion for Relief association, which now prevents her from running charities for five years, she unveiled her second collection for Boss at the start of this autumn 2024. The pieces are comfortable and elegant, with flowing one-piece dresses, down jackets, pink fur jackets and long black textured coats. The garments were shot against a purple background and are sold as limited editions. Boss’ autumn line is embodied by ex-footballer David Beckham, model Gisele Bündchen and singer Burna Boy.

Balenciaga

To promote its Bel Air bag, Balenciaga photographed a five-star cast under the lens of Nadav Kander. The set design is simple but skilfully mastered: a grey white background and a chair, where the muses pose. Among them was the sublime Isabelle Huppert, very close to the House, dressed in ripped trousers and an imposing synthetic fur coat. And let’s not forget actresses Naomi Watts and Michelle Yeoh. All wearing Balenciaga it-bags.

Zara

The new Zara collection by Italian designer Stefano Pilati had already caused quite a stir at the beginning of September, marking a new stage in the fast-fashion chain’s move towards luxury. And the firm under the aegis of the giant Inditex has not stopped there. It chose supermodel Gisele Bündchen to embody the line, in a black and white campaign shot by the great photographer Steven Meisel. The model poses with the designer in the style of the most prestigious high-end fashion houses.
