The Olsen sisters: entrepreneurs who have conquered fashion

For nearly 20 years, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been walking the steps of success. With their brand The Row, launched when they were in their twenties, the twins embody a certain success with their fashion made by women for women.

Children-TV stars (Adventures in Paris, Totally twins, A day in New York…), the Olson sisters had a mediatized childhood, with its advantages and disadvantages. Their entrepreneurial spirit is part of their personality. At the age of seven, accompanied by their father, they started their production company and became its president at the age of 18. Barely over the age of 18, they are already among the most influential young women on the small screen. While they were predestined for a destiny in front of the cameras and could have enjoyed the comfort of an already well-planned film career, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, born in June 1986, chose another artistic field.

Passion first

As early as 2006, the Olsen twins decided to start in fashion. Still in the prime of their lives, they founded The Row, whose name is inspired by Savile Row, the street of tailors in London. The sisters then impose their style, which has lasted for years. They understand women and imagine clothes in which they can feel good and lead their lives as they see fit.

The style is clean, comfortable, minimalist and elegant. Their first collection focuses on classic dresses, leggings and t-shirts, far from the shackles of certain lines. The brand values high-end materials that promise a good hold on the body and chic cuts. The colors are rather classic and the volumes and textures are worked subtly. The result is a portable yet distinctive, modern and timeless collection. A Quiet Luxury spirit can’t be more fashionable today. In 2018, the sisters launch their first men’s line.

“The Row collections also explore the power of simplistic forms that speak of discretion and are based on uncompromising quality” says the brand on its website.

Shop, Fashion Week, rewards…

The Olsen sisters have won the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Women’s Clothing Designer of the Year award twice, in 2012 and 2015.

The brand opened its first in-house shop in 2014 in Los Angeles, followed by New York, London and, for the last few months, Paris. In 2019, The Row launched online sales, allowing it to reach audiences around the world.

In 2022, the Maison unveils its collection for the first time at Paris Fashion Week, which further strengthens the legitimacy of the Olsen sisters.

Last year, the Bettencourt and Wertheimer families, owners of L’Oréal and Chanel respectively, took a minority stake in the brand, allowing it to continue its development with significant support.

While the TV career helped Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen get into fashion, American twins are often used as an example in the business world. They still inspire young talent today and are among the most influential women in the ready-to-wear sector.
