Which films have been selected for the Cannes 2025 Festival?

From 13 to 24 May, the Cannes Film Festival will be rolling out its red carpet, trodden by the world’s biggest celebrities. Discover the feature films selected in Competition or Out of Competition and in the other sections, Un Certain Regard, Séances de Minuit, Cannes Première or Séances Spéciales.

 

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival gets underway in a few weeks’ time, in mid-May, and will, as every year, present the hottest films in the 7th art. Dedicated to the memory of actress Emilie Duquesne, who died on 16 March this year, the selection includes films by Wes Anderson, Julia Ducournau, Chie Hayakawa and Sergei Loznitsa. Nearly 3,000 films – a record – from 156 different countries were screened to select the 60-odd entries, which include many first-time directors.

 

A host of celebrities from all over the world will be taking to the Festival stage. Joaquin Phoenix, Virginie Efira, Vincent Lacoste, Emma Stone, Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Cruise are all expected to attend. Robert de Niro will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony, celebrating his entire career.

 

Films in Competition

 

Among the films in Competition are 6 directed by women: Romeria by Carla Simon, Sound of Falling by Mascha Schilinski, The Mastermind by Kelly Reichardt, La Petite dernière by Hafzia Herzi , Renoir by Chie Hayakawa and Alpha by Julia Ducournau. Partir un jour, Amélie Bonnin’s first film, will be presented Out of Competition.

Some well-known names from the Cannes Festival will be present, including Wes Anderson with The Phoenician Scheme, the Dardenne brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc with Jeunes Mères, Dominik Moll with Dossier 137 and Jafar Panahi with Un simple accident.

 

There is also Ari Aster for Eddington, Oliver Hermanus for The History of Sound, Oliver Laxe for Sirat, Richard Linklater for Nouvelle Vague, Sergei Loznitsa for Deux Procureurs, Mario Martone for Fuori, Kleber Mendonça Filho for O Agente Secreto, Tarik Saleh for Les Aigles de la République and Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value.

 

Un Certain Regard films

 

In the Un Certain Regard category, Diego Céspedes will present La Misteriosa Mirada Del Flamenco, Hubert Charuel, Météors; Akinola Davies JR,My Father’s Shadow; Stéphane Demoustier L’inconnu de la grande arche, Harris Dickinson, Urchin and Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound.

The other categories

 

Spike Lee (Highest 2 Lowest), Thierry Klifa (The Richest Woman in the World), Cédric Klapisch (The Coming of the Future), Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) and Rebecca Zlotowski (Vie Privée) are competing in the Out of Competition category.

 

The Midnight Screening section includes Yann Gozlan (Dalloway), Genki Kawamura (Exit 8) and Juno Mak (Feng Lin Huo Shan).

 

Fatih Akin (Amrum), Michael Angelo Covino (Splitsville), Sebastian Lelio (La Ola), Alex Lutz (Connemara), Raoul Peck (Orwell: 2+2=5) and Kirill Serebrennikov (Das Verschwinden des Josef Mengele) have been selected in the Cannes Première division.

 

Finally, the Special Screenings category features films by Bono (Stories of Surrender), Romane Bohringer (Dites-lui que je l’aime) and Sylvain Chomet (Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol).
