For a few months, the expression ‘Gen Z Stare’ has been circulating on social networks. She describes this fixed gaze, often empty or wide open, accompanied by an impassive face attributed to the young generation. Behind this apparent lack of reaction in everyday exchanges, hides a real social phenomenon, revealing a growing gap between Generation Z and its elders.
The “Gen Z Stare” emerged mainly in the US via TikTok in 2025. And he quickly sparked a generational debate on social media. On the platforms, many young people imitate this attitude rooted in their behavior: empty and fixed eyes, even judgemental ones, disdainful or spread wide and a static expression, without any words. As if the young people were put on pause. This posture did not fail to make older generations react, annoyed by this awkward passivity at the moment when a verbal response or social interaction is normally expected. And everyone seems to have arguments much deeper than one might think.
The ills of an ultra-connected and yet disconnected generation
For the younger generations, this gaze is nothing other than a legitimate response, even humorous or provocative, to questions deemed awkward, absurd or intrusive. Some see it as a conscious strategy stronger than words faced with a plurality of situations. Gen Z Stare is observed in the professional environment, whether in customer service contexts – cash register, catering, sales -, and when dealing with teachers in the school sector or colleagues and superiors at work. At home, this expression can also be a response to parents in case of disagreements.

If this reaction can quickly annoy, many young people defend themselves by linking this phenomenon to a difficult mental health context. On one hand, the social anxiety that gangrens the young generations. This expression can be a sign of inner embarrassment in social situations, especially for those at the beginning of their professional life. On the other hand, an emotional fatigue and an authentic and sincere posture, far from the hypocrisy required to be well seen in social circles. In sum, a form of forced rejection of greetings or performative positivity, a voluntary gesture of non-compliance, even a protective barrier against emotional exhaustion.

According to experts, the Gen Z Stare is not only a way of responding for the young generation. The phenomenon is largely explained by the digital era in which these people under 30 grew up. They attribute this look to a lack of experience in face-to-face communication. And the pandemic seems to have worsened the trend. Lockdowns and distance classes would have reduced opportunities for real social interactions, fostering some withdrawal or frozen emotion.
An intergenerational war
If one can explain the Gen Z Stare by ultra connectivity and lack of social ease, older generations (Millennials, Gen X, Boomers) see this behavior very negatively. Many perceive it as rudeness, indifference, or a sign of disengagement. Some also indicate that they are fed up with the number of situations considered ‘cringe’ (uncomfortable, editor’s note) by the youngest who are apprehended in a socially classic and elementary way by their elders.

In the professional world, this neutral outlook is often associated with a lack of motivation or enthusiasm. Some employers believe that it reflects a poor work ethic, or even an inability to interact with clients or colleagues. For generations accustomed to more ‘warm’ social codes (smile, small courtesy word, assertive eye contact), this facial mutism is perceived as a sudden break in communication standards.
A real misunderstanding therefore settles between the generations. Where the Generation Z sometimes consider the Gen Z Stare as a form of authenticity or voluntary distance, their elders mainly see it as a disconcerting coldness. Yet, this intergenerational war does not seem new to the experts. “Every generation criticizes the next generation,” said Ellen Hendriksen, a behavioral psychologist and social anxiety specialist, to Business Insider. “Generation Z may be less willing to please people, but that means some professionalism has also been lost.”

“For most young employees, working with people of different ages and generations is a novelty […] The empty glances you receive from young workers may more indicate that they don’t know what to do and that they lack self-confidence at work than if they try to be (passively) aggressive towards Generation Z” explained Meg Jay, a clinical psychologist who has written about young people in their twenties. The solution may lie in understanding each other and engaging in conversation with a young generation that seems to be on reserve.
