From karate champion to television icon, Chuck Norris influenced several generations. At 86, the man behind the legend has passed away.
On March 19, 2026, the world lost a living legend of cinema and martial arts: Chuck Norris died at the age of 86, surrounded by his family in Hawaii. For more than half a century, he combined discipline, physical strength, and charisma, becoming a symbol of both film and television.
Born on March 10, 1940, in Oklahoma, Carlos Ray Norris grew up in a modest family and experienced a childhood marked by frequent moves, his parents’ divorce, and financial hardships. By joining the military and serving in South Korea, he entered a structured environment and discovered martial arts. He quickly became a six-time world middleweight karate champion, later opening his own schools and training several Hollywood celebrities.
From Action to Comedy: Chuck Norris in Film
His film career truly began in 1972 with The Way of the Dragon, where he faced Bruce Lee in a now-legendary fight at the Colosseum in Rome. Encouraged by Steve McQueen, he went on to star in action films such as Lone Wolf McQuade in 1983, solidifying his image as an unshakable hero.

In Missing in Action (1984), he played a former soldier returning to Vietnam to rescue his comrades. He led an elite commando unit to free hostages held by terrorists in The Delta Force (1986). In 1985’s Invasion U.S.A., he faced a group of saboteurs trying to wreak havoc on American soil.
Each role reinforced his image as a relentless and physically capable hero able to overcome any obstacle. Norris, however, justified this aspect of cinema: “I don’t defend violence for the sake of violence. It’s the way it’s done. If it’s well written, an action film can tell a story as effectively as any drama,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1994.
The following two decades saw him diversify his roles. He appeared in more family-friendly or comedic films such as Sidekicks (1992) and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), showing a lighter and more approachable side of his personality.
The Turning Point: Walker, Texas Ranger
The 1990s marked the peak of his television career with Walker, Texas Ranger. Playing Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger guided by a strong sense of justice and moral values, he won an international audience.

The series ran for nine seasons (1993–2001) and turned his character into a pop culture icon. In France, many families gathered around the TV with him during Sunday lunch.
His influence was such that after the 2000s, the internet began widely circulating the famous “Chuck Norris Facts.” These memes and visuals are absurd jokes exaggerating his strength, invincibility, or impossible feats. Many of these jokes were directly inspired by his role in Walker, Texas Ranger, where he played a morally upright, highly skilled ranger capable of solving any problem with his fists and cleverness.
A Man of Discipline and Rigor
This role reflected part of his real-life personality. Beyond his achievements on screen, Chuck Norris was known for his life philosophy: discipline, perseverance, and self-improvement. He always emphasized the importance of family, faith, and personal growth.
His personal life reflected this discipline: a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he often put his career on hold to support his loved ones during difficult times. “Worrying about a problem doesn’t help… Worrying doesn’t solve the problem; it makes it worse. What you need to do is try to find solutions. And if you do, you won’t have time to worry about it,” he told Bill Boggs in an earlier interview recently cited by several media outlets.
Having passed away on March 19, 2026, Chuck Norris leaves behind a vast legacy: martial arts champion, iconic actor, television legend, and cultural phenomenon. He inspired generations of viewers, artists, and athletes, and his name remains associated with strength, discipline, and excellence. Until his death, he lived by sport as a mantra.
