Taylor Swift misplaces a $12,000 diamond at the Video Music Awards

Adorned in jewels, Taylor Swift left the MTV Video Music Awards decorated with awards. She equalled the record for the most awards won in a single evening. But the event set the web ablaze when the singer misplaced a diamond worth…$12,000!

On September 12, the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 were held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Hosted by Nicki Minaj, the event brought together the biggest artists of the moment to reward the best music videos of the year. And if glamour and elegance were the order of the day, it was an unusual adventure that caught the eye.

Singer Taylor Swift, nominated in several categories, paired her look with an assortment of jewelry, including an onyx and diamond ring from high-end jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. According to Joseph Saidian & Sons, the 18-carat yellow gold ring retails for $12,000.

However, at some point during the evening, it seems that the singer managed to dislodge the stone in the center of the ring and misplace it!

As a video shows, the “Anti-Hero” alerted a security guard as soon as she noticed the diamond was missing, holding out the ring without its impressive stone, and grimacing. Taylor Swift is then seen bending down to inspect the floor in the hope of finding the stone.

At the end of the evening, when the artist took to the stage to accept the Video of the Year award for her single “Anti-Hero”, the ring was conspicuously absent from her left hand.

Fortunately, the misadventure had a favorable outcome. “The piece didn’t slide off the stage!” one of the star’s representatives said later. “It was found on the side of the stage, in a far corner, much to everyone’s relief.”

Jewelry brand partnerships

This loss, which could be a disaster for any mortal, probably didn’t have the same impact for Taylor Swift, explains Julia Hackman Chafe, content creator specializing in jewelry and gemstone wholesaler.

Julia Hackman Chafe explains that celebrities don’t usually own the jewelry they wear to awards ceremonies. Instead, their stylists provide them with bling. If a stylist sees a piece they want, they go through the jewelry store’s PR company to reserve the accessory.

“Jewelry companies use different PR agencies,” she explains. The latter “then work with famous stylists, who can choose from a large number of different pieces to give to their customers.”

Safeguards have been put in place in case of emergencies, such as what happened at the VMAs. Ms. Chafe explains that, in general, a representative of “one of the parties” signs an insurance waiver for the product in case it is damaged (or lost during the VMAs).

Evening wear

The $12,000 ring wasn’t the only expensive piece of jewelry the “Cruel Summer” singer wore that evening. Taylor Swift layered on several gold and silver necklaces, including a vintage chain also from Joseph Saidian & Sons, priced at $65,000, as well as a diamond choker necklace presumably from Anita Ko, priced at $31,675.

The star also wore a pair of diamond tassel earrings believed to be from Maria Tash, retailing at $21,950 each, and adorned her left ear with a diamond ear cuff, believed to be from Anita Ko, costing $3,850.

Swift’s dress was custom-made by Donatella Versace herself, who shared a carousel of images of the star on the red carpet on Instagram.

“I couldn’t have been more proud to design this dress for your beautiful VMA entrance tonight,” commented Donatella Versace. “You have dominated the world with your tour and your music is timeless.”

Notorious awards

At the MTV Video Music Awards 2023, Taylor Swift won no less than nine Moon Person trophies, including Song of the Year, with her track “Anti-Hero”! But above all, she made history by winning her record-breaking fourth Video of the Year award.

Rema and Selena Gomez also made history, winning the top Afrobeats award for their hit “Calm Down”.

Nicki Minaj won Best Hip-Hop Album for her sensational hit “Super Freaky Girl”. Shakira received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, wowing the audience with a captivating bilingual medley of her greatest hits across the decades.

The 33-year-old artist isn’t the first celebrity to lose a piece of jewelry at a major awards ceremony. In 2018, Ariana Grande’s $169,000 diamond necklace came loose while she was performing at the Billboard Music Awards. But it had also been found at the end of the ceremony.
