Cristiano Ronaldo is quite simply one of the most famous athletes in the world. His achievements on and off the field have made him a global icon for more than twenty years now.
In 2025, Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record in the history of sport : he became the first athlete to officially achieve billionaire status, having earned €1.2 billion over his career according to Bloomberg—an achievement that goes beyond mere exploits on the field. Beyond his unforgettable performances, it is his ability to convert his talent into global economic influence that makes him a model of success today.
The foundations of a legend
Born in 1985 on the Portuguese island of Madeira, Cristiano Ronaldo grew up in a modest family. This did not prevent him from being spotted early on for his exceptional football talent : he quickly joined the Sporting CP training center, where he attracted the interest of the biggest European clubs.
His transfer to Manchester United in 2003 at just 18 years old marked the beginning of his exceptional career. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, he quickly became one of the most promising young talents in world football : his speed, technique, and mental strength propelled him rapidly to the top of the sport. Between 2003 and 2009, he scored 118 goals for the Red Devils and won three Premier League titles, the 2008 Champions League, the Club World Cup, and a Ballon d’Or.
He then moved to Real Madrid in 2009 for €94 million and began one of the most prolific chapters in football history. At this club, Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games, becoming Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer. He contributed to four Champions League victories, including three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018, and went on to win four Ballon d’Or awards during this period : in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.

Ronaldo nevertheless chose to leave the Spanish team in 2018 for a new challenge at Juventus, where he immediately established himself as the sporting and commercial leader of the Turin club. He won two Serie A titles and scored over 100 goals in just three seasons.
Now under contract with Al-Nassr, a Saudi Pro League club, Ronaldo continues to play at a high level despite being 40 years old. His longevity is exceptional in a sport where the career span of top athletes is generally less than 40 years. His contract extension with the Saudis in 2025, which includes a stake in the club, was one of the key factors in him reaching the symbolic milestone of $1 billion in career earnings. He continues to write in the football record books, notably becoming the first player to score more than 100 goals for four different major teams in 2025.
But his achievements are not limited to individual statistics. On the international stage, Ronaldo has transcended his team by leading Portugal to historic successes and played a central role in the Euro 2016 victory over France.
More recently, in 2025, he made a decisive contribution to Portugal’s victory in the UEFA Nations League, a competition in which he once again demonstrated his leadership instincts by scoring a crucial goal before his team won on penalties against Spain.
The only downside is that he has never won a World Cup… His performances in this competition are by no means insignificant, as he is the only player to have scored in five World Cups and is one of the top scorers in the history of the UEFA European Championships, having found the back of the net in every Euro tournament he has played in since 2004.
The emergence of a commercial empire
Ronaldo is now a billionaire, but not only because of his astronomical earnings. A substantial part of his fortune comes from advertising contracts and strategic partnerships with some of the world’s biggest brands.
Since 2003, he has been linked to Nike by a lifetime contract, estimated at nearly $1 billion, one of the most lucrative deals ever signed between an athlete and a brand. His image, now inseparable from the swoosh, has been used as the basis for a series of products and global advertising campaigns.
In addition to Nike, Ronaldo has collaborated with numerous international brands such as Herbalife, Clear Shampoo, Tag Heuer, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Samsung, and digital platforms such as Binance and DAZN, allowing him to maintain a permanent commercial presence on the world stage. His huge social media following, exceeding one billion followers across all platforms, further amplifies his advertising value to brands and his ability to generate colossal revenues from sponsored posts.
But Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t content with just sponsorship deals : he built a global brand under the name CR7, which extends far beyond soccer. Launched in 2013, the brand started with a clothing line before expanding to shoes, fragrances, eyewear, and underwear, all sold in dozens of countries.

One of the pillars of his empire is the Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels chain, the result of a collaboration with the Pestana Group. With locations in Madeira, Lisbon, Madrid, New York, and Marrakech, this collection of hotel complexes reflects the lifestyle Ronaldo has built around his brand.
At the same time, Ronaldo has also developed CR7 fitness centers in partnership with Crunch Fitness, as well as a network of aesthetic clinics specializing in hair restoration.
Finally, his investments also extend to luxury real estate and, more recently, technology : this month, Ronaldo announced his entry into the artificial intelligence start-up Perplexity AI, strengthening his presence in a booming sector.
A constant generosity
Beyond his career and entrepreneurship, Cristiano Ronaldo is also committed to numerous humanitarian causes around the world. Throughout his career, he has supported relief efforts in the wake of natural disasters, for example by providing funds and equipment after devastating earthquakes in Nepal and Turkey.
His generosity has also been evident in the field of healthcare, where he has funded medical treatment for seriously ill children and contributed to cancer centers, particularly in Portugal. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ronaldo and his agent also funded intensive care units and provided essential equipment to several Portuguese hospitals, thereby strengthening the capacity of healthcare systems to cope with the crisis.
At the same time, he has been involved with international organizations such as Save the Children, UNICEF, and World Vision, becoming an ambassador for campaigns against hunger, for access to education, and for the protection of children in conflict zones.
On several occasions, he has sold or auctioned personal items such as a Ballon d’Or and a Golden Boot to raise funds for educational and medical programs. His commitment goes beyond simple financial donations : Ronaldo makes good use of his global visibility on social media to mobilize his millions of fans.
