Glory, money and controversy: diving into the world of OnlyFans

With 378 million users and 4.6 million creators in 2024, OnlyFans has established itself as the leader in adult content creation. This rapid success, however, comes with significant criticism regarding its excesses and impact.

Before the creation of OnlyFans, the adult entertainment industry was largely dominated by professional studios and ad-funded platforms, offering very few ways for independent creators to directly monetize their work. Beyond the omnipresence of free content, revenues flowed almost exclusively into the pockets of intermediaries. The rise of digital influence, popularized by Facebook and Instagram, also encouraged individuals to showcase themselves freely and build their own communities on social media.

A launch amid the rise of social media and influencer marketing

It was in this context that OnlyFans was launched in London in 2016 by Timothy Stokely and his family through the company Fenix International. The goal was simple yet innovative: allow creators to sell exclusive content directly to their fans via subscriptions, thus bypassing traditional models.

Although the platform initially hosted various types of creators, adult content quickly became dominant, as the paid subscription model proved particularly suited to this market. This idea revolutionized the online porn economy by giving creators unprecedented control over their income and greater freedom over their content and schedules.

The real turning point came in 2018 when Leonid Radvinsky, a Ukrainian-American entrepreneur experienced in adult entertainment, acquired a majority stake in OnlyFans. Under his leadership, the platform took a clearer direction toward adult content while strengthening its subscription-based business model. Leonid Radvinsky remained, until his death in March 2026 at the age of 43, a key figure in transforming OnlyFans into a global giant, valued at up to 8 billion dollars.

OnlyFans in numbers

The COVID-19 pandemic played a decisive role in OnlyFans’ growth. Lockdowns, the need for more direct digital connection, and the necessity for many creators to find new income sources led to massive adoption.

In 2019, according to Stats OnlyFans, the platform had around 13.5 million users and 350,000 creators. The following year, these figures exploded: 82.3 million users and 1.6 million creators. By 2024, it reached nearly 378 million users and 4.6 million creators, generating about 1.44 billion dollars in revenue for the company. The number of creators increased by 1,222% between 2019 and 2025, while fans spent 7.22 billion dollars on OnlyFans in 2024.

Its success is based on a transparent revenue-sharing model: 80% of earnings go directly to creators, while the platform takes 20%. This system has allowed some creators to turn their activity into real careers, with annual incomes reaching several hundred thousand or even millions of dollars. This model has not only attracted millions of users and creators but has also made OnlyFans a major player in the digital economy and a benchmark for direct content monetization.

Big earnings for celebrities, low income for unknown profiles

OnlyFans’ rapid growth has been accompanied by numerous controversies, but it has also enabled the emergence of true digital celebrities. Some personalities have become globally famous thanks to the platform, with their earnings reaching impressive heights. Among them, Blac Chyna, a former reality TV star and influencer, is said to have earned several million dollars per year and now generates estimated monthly revenues of 20 million dollars.

Meanwhile, model and actress Bella Thorne reportedly earned up to 2 million dollars in just a few weeks when she joined the platform. Singer Cardi B and influencer and adult content creator Mia Khalifa have also used OnlyFans to directly monetize their audience, turning their fame into substantial income. These creators now live in real luxury, symbolizing the platform’s maximum potential for those who manage to attract a massive audience, sometimes even without posting pornographic content or by limiting themselves to erotic material.

However, this extreme success hides a much more contrasted reality. The vast majority of creators on OnlyFans are small profiles, often unknown to the general public, who struggle to make a living despite modest monthly subscriptions. A creator earns on average 131 dollars per month after platform fees, while the top 1% of OnlyFans creators earn around 49,000 dollars per year. The contrast between millionaire stars and struggling small creators highlights the structural inequality of the platform’s economy.

Freedom under control

Another often less visible dimension is that of managers, sometimes referred to as “pimps,” who handle the management of creators’ accounts. These “managers” recruit and help produce content, set prices, and attract subscribers in exchange for a commission on earnings.

While some act as mentors or agents, others are criticized for abusive practices, taking significant shares of revenue or putting pressure on creators to produce more content. This system has contributed to the professionalization of some accounts, but it has also fueled debates about exploitation and the economic dependence of creators.

At the same time, OnlyFans remains at the center of many discussions about explicit content regulation, user safety, and the protection of minors. Its impact- economic, cultural, and social – is therefore twofold. It transforms lives and careers, but it also exposes the flaws and inequalities of a system where audience and visibility remain the keys to success.

Influential adult content creators regularly remind people, especially very young ones who want to get started: “think carefully, because everything stays on the internet.”
