Taylor Swift: her album “The Life of a Showgirl” breaks new records shortly after its release

Ten months after her triumphant world tour, The Era’s Tour, Taylor Swift unveils “The Life of a Showgirl,” her twelfth album. Released on October 3, it is already breaking sales records in the United States. While the name and aesthetic of this opus, inspired by the pop megastar’s unfulfilled passion for the Broadway stage, electrify her audience, the lyrics, free of any sense of sadness, divide critics… and her own fans.

Glitter and frills…

The least we can say is that when it comes to surprises and superlatives, Taytay—as her Swifties fans affectionately call her—rarely disappoints, and she has proven this once again with her new and twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl.

A “leaked” launch on her partner’s brother’s podcast, personal confessions on TV shows, polished visuals, songs, music videos, and special edition vinyls, released bit by bit, partnerships with movie theaters around the world… The marketing genius, heavily influenced by the 35-year-old American’s personal storytelling, has struck again.

So much so that the megastar has managed to break record after record, whether in terms of the number of albums sold in a single day or the number of pre-registrations on the Spotify platform.

A new shower of records

Let’s remember that during The Era’s Tour, her monster tour (149 concerts on 5 continents, or 517 hours of shows), Taylor Swift had already earned the admiration of the world’s leading marketing specialists and entrepreneurs for the revenue she had generated.

She became the most commercially successful musician in the world, with the most lucrative music tour in history ($2 billion in revenue for The Era’s Tour), becoming the darling of the American economy ($199 million in economic impact on the cities hosting her tour).

The release of The Life of a Showgirl is in line with this same idea. According to data analysis company Luminate, the artist managed to sell 2.7 million physical or digital albums in one day in the US. Based on the first week, she is expected to easily beat British singer Adele, who sold 3.4 million copies of her album 25 in the week following its release in 2015.

According to Luminate, Taylor Swift also broke the record for vinyl record sales, selling 1.2 million copies in one week. This record takes into account albums purchased through pre-orders and shipped by mail.

Spotify also had reason to celebrate, with The Life of a Showgirl named Album of the Year just eleven hours after its release.

Unveiled last Friday, The Fate of Ophelia, the first single from her album, has become the most listened to track in the history of the Canadian music platform, with over 30 million plays. Until now, the title holder was none other than… Taylor Swift herself with Fortnight, a duet with Post Malone released in 2024 (25 million plays).

Not to mention the number of pre-registrations for the album’s release (6 million!), which is more than the singer’s previous album, The Tortured Poets Department, released in 2024.

The North American box office is not to be outdone either. Her documentary on the behind-the-scenes making of this twelfth album, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, shown exclusively in theaters for one weekend, is said to have generated $33 million in revenue.

The art of storytelling

Since her debut, Taylor Swift has stood out from her pop rivals by “speaking her mind,” delivering her romantic disappointments, doubts, and frustrations through catchy rhythms and raw lyrics.

True to her “direct-to-fan” strategy of exclusives, special moments, and limited editions, the singer has renewed her partnership with movie theaters, which she developed during her sold-out The Era’s Tour, in order to respond to the frustration of her fans who were unable to get tickets by offering a film in October 2023, Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour.

This new release was not intended to be a new recording of this historic tour, but rather to offer additional content, in this case a making-of feature looking back at the writing of the twelve songs on the album The Life of a Showgirl, as well as the creation of her first music video, The Fate of Ophelia.

The documentary was screened in 8,000 theaters, generating euphoria among Swifties, who were eager to hear every anecdote, confidence, and other insider secrets (including the metaphors in her song lyrics) that the artist distills in her viral content. This has helped her maintain a parasocial relationship with her fans, where identification plays a major role, creating an intimate connection with the artist to the point where they consider her a close friend or even a big sister.

Collector fans are willing to open their wallets to get their hands on the holy grail or even artifacts that bring them closer to their idols. And Taylor Swift understands this well, with her album available in 25 different versions. Each one offers an exclusive cover, but also and above all, unique content. The beauty thus expects her album to be purchased several times over.

Joy… and astonishment among fans

The idyll between the star and her fans is well established. However, this Life of a Showgirl is, like her previous albums, a reflection of her questions, her loves, and her mood at the moment. In short, as The Eras Tour proved, each album is linked to an era, or a part of the singer’s personal life.

However, the creative process, like the release of The Life of a Showgirl, comes at a time when the “truly happy” singer has made her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs American football player Travis Kelce official. This new boyfriend-muse is different from her previous ones, however, in that he is her “forever night-stand,” as she writes in one of the songs on the new album. The couple even staged an engagement ceremony last September.

And that’s where the excitement began to fade for some. Many Swifties who had identified with the genuine heartbreak recounted in their idol’s songs felt taken aback by the new album.

Critics themselves were not necessarily kind to her, pointing out uninspired lyrics and forgettable melodies. The Guardian even went so far as to describe it as “the dull glitter of a star who seems exhausted.” From there, it’s only a short step to saying that the album was rushed.

Of course, most fans don’t begrudge her for being “happy and peaceful” as never before, or for wanting to get married. On the other hand, some are beginning to see an episode of the animated series Family Guy as almost prophetic, coming true.

In episode 5 of season 15, the singer found herself deprived of her talent as a singer-songwriter after finding happiness, which inspired her to write fundamentally positive and corny lyrics. A fear shared by the star herself in an interview with BBC 1 Radio: “I had this dark fear that if I was really happy and free, being myself and fulfilled in a relationship, what would happen if the inspiration dried up?”

Even when the singer’s relationship with the professional athlete was made official, well before the album was announced, a fan wrote on Reddit, “I’m afraid of what will happen if we get a whole album of Travis, I might not even be able to listen to half of it.”

This question was echoed by The New Yorker in its article “Do we like Taylor Swift when she’s happy?”

After analyzing the criticism levelled at the album and defending a few gems (Father Figure and Ruin the Friendship), the author, Tyler Foggatt, warns against the particularly virulent sexist—even misogynistic—movement that has taken over the digital sphere since the release of the album The Life of a Showgirl coincided with the pop icon’s engagement.

In his opinion piece, the author reports comments found on the web such as: “Is there a carbon monoxide leak in her house, because this can’t be the same woman who wrote folklore and evermore,” exclaimed one fan on X, or “Can someone tell me if the English teacher showed up? “ said another ironically on Reddit (in response to the couple’s Instagram announcement of their engagement, revealed by the caption ”your English teacher and your PE teacher are getting married”).

While the resentment is primarily directed at Travis Kelce, it seems clear that this paradigm shift in the life of Taylor Swift, long portrayed as an “old maid without children” and now “freed from loneliness,” gives the impression of breaking the unspoken pact with her fanbase of young, troubled souls. An audience that had previously identified with her vulnerability and failures and may now be tempted to break ties with the star.
